Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting milestone, but training should begin the moment your furry friend steps through your door. Those first 24 hours set the foundation for your puppy’s behavior and habits for years to come. Here’s how to start training your puppy effectively from day one:

Create a Safe Space

Before your puppy arrives, prepare a designated area with a crate or bed. This space serves as their sanctuary—a place of comfort when overwhelmed. Line it with soft bedding and include a few toys, but keep it simple. When your puppy arrives, gently introduce them to this space, allowing them to explore at their own pace without forcing them inside.

Establish a Routine Immediately

Puppies thrive on predictability. Create a schedule for feeding, bathroom breaks, play sessions, and sleep. A typical puppy schedule might include:

• Early morning potty break (5-6 AM)
• Breakfast (7 AM)
• Mid-morning potty break and short training session (9 AM)
• Midday meal and potty break (12 PM)
• Afternoon nap (1-3 PM)
• Evening meal and potty break (5 PM)

Begin Potty Training Right Away

Take your puppy outside every 1-2 hours, after meals, after playtime, and immediately after waking from naps. Choose a specific bathroom spot in your yard and use a consistent command like “go potty.” When they eliminate outside, provide immediate praise and a small treat. If accidents happen indoors (and they will), never punish your puppy—simply clean thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to remove the scent.

Start Name Recognition

Use your puppy’s name frequently in a positive, upbeat tone. When they look at you in response to their name, reward them with praise, pets, or a tiny treat. This lays the groundwork for all future training by teaching them to pay attention when called.

Introduce Basic Commands Simply

On day one, you can begin with just one or two simple commands:

• “Sit” – Hold a treat close to your puppy’s nose, then move your hand up so their head follows the treat and their bottom naturally lowers. Say “sit” as they do it, then immediately reward.
